First tell us about your business--how and why did you start it?

I blame/credit my kids for the inspiration for this business. My son and daughter-in-law got married in August 2015, I watched my daughter-in-law do their wedding, she made it look easy, and after that she became involved in the wedding industry. A year later we did my daughter and son-in-laws wedding, another DIY wedding. After that I decided that it wasn’t so bad and I could do this myself. With some inspiration from my kids and a lot of searching for property that would allow me to build a wedding venue, I purchased a campground with the possibility to do just that.

What services do you provide?

Spur Meadows is a property that has a campground and an events center focusing on weddings. We cater and market to couples recently engaged looking for an affordable wedding venue. We also are interested in hosting other events looking for a venue for public or private social gatherings. Our campground is open May-October for camping and of course we cater to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally the first of August every year.

Who can benefit from your services?

If you are planning a wedding, rehearsal dinner, gathering of people for a social event call us, or out of town guests looking for camping, send them to Spur Meadows. Our property is relaxed, causal and available to enjoy for anyone looking to get out of town and enjoy the beauty of South Dakota.

What is a word of advice you can offer to other women in business?

It’s scary,  but step outside of your comfort zone. There are plenty of people out there to help you along the way. Go seek out those who can help you, be open to learning, and don’t forget to breathe.

Why do you love The OWN?

I work full time as well as working in my business, Spur Meadows. For 30+ years I have worked in a male dominated field in Information Technology. I did not realize how supportive women are to each other until I joined the OWN. It has been so refreshing to see how women support each other, the sharing of knowledge, the openness to each other. The first place I go when I need a service is the OWN, looking for some amazing woman who can help me. Additionally I’ve been inspired to be involved in a Women In IT group at work, trying to provide a forum for support for each of us who work for my company that I’m employed with. I am not sure I would have been as supportive of this effort if I had not joined the OWN. I have a goal to arrange my day so that I can attend the Charette, I read the ‘Best Of’s Charette’ on Facebook and every time I wish I could have attended. My goal for this fall and winter.
