We've been growing quickly here at The OWN, so quickly, in fact, that we're looking to hire our first part time Admin (the shared assistant for our clients)! We've also expanded our internship program, and have successfully set up 2 interns, one of which is starting tomorrow morning!
Obviously, we're excited. Hiring is something we thought would be at least a couple months away. We're certainly not complaining, and couldn't be happier about who we get to work with for the coming weeks. We hope you'll take time to come visit them!
All that said, we started seeing a pattern for the young entrepreneurs we interviewed. At The OWN, it was a conviction from the beginning that so much of our lives are spent working... why not make that time enjoyable rather than dreaded? To our delight, this is exactly the movement we're seeing from the next generation; work shouldn't be about a paycheck alone. In the nearly industrialized culture we currently find ourselves in, we're starting to become more and more aware that maybe... just maybe... we've settled. We've settled for inflexible lives with a flexible paycheck. We've settled for doing what's safe, rather than what's fun. We've settled on succeeding at things that don't truly matter to us. We've settled for dependability rather than growth.
Thankfully, the next generation hasn't followed this lead. The up-and-comers in our work force have decided that a life of being told what the "route to success" IS, just isn't filled with enough happiness. In turn they've laughed it off. Now we're witnessing more and more people, young and experienced alike, taking a stand for their quality of life, rather than the quantity of dollars.
The good news is that there are so many ways to get from A to B. As they say, there's a thousand ways to crack an egg; similarly there are several roads that lead to our individual success. The most wonderful part is that success (like happiness) isn't a limited quantity, and since we all have a different goal, it's not a commodity we have to compete for. There's plenty to go around!
Several of our OWNers, Members, and (excitingly) even our future staffers are living proof that there truly is a way to succeed at a dream you create for yourself. Sometimes all it takes is a new vantage point, a new way of thinking. Other times it takes the shape of a completely new adventure. Either way, it's not measured in dollars alone, but as Richard St. John said, "when you do [something] for love, the money comes anyways."
We couldn't be more excited to bring our talented interns and Admins on board! Keep an eye out for updates, and the exciting relationships we're forming with staff, OWNers, and Members!
